To create a campaign that shows ‘living with refugees’ in a correct and nuanced way. Not by focussing on the negative sides, which are generally know, but by also showing the positive aspects, without being naïve. Life, as it is.
Timing: fall 2007
“Refugees, they’re a good laugh”, a campaign by Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen, became an efficient social marketing tool about living together with refugees. Refugees are leaving a painful and confronting situation behind, and have often experienced grave loss. Once they are under the protection of Belgium, they can start building their future here. Looking for a job, going to school, doing sports, going out and … being able to have a laugh again. That’s why jokes are the central theme in this campaign. Warm and genuine. Recognizable and cross-borders. Mani, a young man that fled from Angola and now lives in Belgium, tells a joke in a TV and radio show. His warm laughter encourages the public to laugh and share jokes.
